BritRail Passes

Great Britain, due to its compact size and over 18,000 trains traveling to more than 2,500 cities and villages every day, is an ideal country to see by rail. As point-to-point tickets in Britain are expensive, a railpass is a good deal especially if going from London to Scotland where the fare up and back alone can cost more than a railpass. The All-Brit passes give unlimited freedom to tour all of England, Scotland and Wales. The England passes focus only on England; and the London Plus passes are perfect for day trips from a London base. For groups of three or more, a discounted Party Pass is available for the All-Brit and England railpasses.

First Trip to Britain

This simple loop of Britain starting and ending in London threads through the cathedral city of York; the elegant Scottish capital Edinburgh (can day-trip to Stirling Castle or St. Andrews, home of golf); the walled city of Chester with much medieval charm on the Welsh border; a piece of the scenic Cotswolds; the university city of Oxford (from Oxford can day-trip to nearby medieval Warwick Castle or Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon); and, finally, the Georgian city of Bath, from which an easy day trip to Salisbury and Stonehenge is possible.

This itinerary is easily customizable. If you have less time, you can shorten the loop by skipping any stop or by returning to London from any point; if you're lucky enough to have more time, you can add a day or two at any stop as each place has plenty to see, or you can even add a different region such as Wales or Cornwall, both within easy reach by rail.

Point-to-point rail tickets for this itinerary would cost considerably more than a BritRail Pass.

    • Gatwick: The Gatwick Express runs nonstop over the 30-mile route to Victoria Station (30 mins; 4 trains/hr; $37 2nd cl/$55 1st cl); if going directly to the north of London or to Scotland, there is also rail service to St. Pancras Station in central London, next-door neighbor to Kings Cross Station from where trains depart to the north (45 mins; 4 trains/hr; $19 2nd cl/$30 1st cl). There is no subway service from Gatwick Airport.
  • Getting to the Continent by Train
    • High-speed Eurostar "Chunnel" trains go from St. Pancras Station in London to the heart of Paris (Nord Station) or Brussels (Midi/Zuid Station, with good rail connections to the Netherlands and to Germany) in less than 2 hours and 20 minutes. Service is about hourly between London and Paris, and about every 2 hours between London and Brussels.
    • There is a complicated tiered-fare structure for Eurostar, and no railpass covers this train; however, railpasses valid in Britain, France and Belgium do allow you to buy a passholder fare, which is the cheapest one-way fare available for adults over 26. For first-class passengers, a meal served at your seat, is included in the Eurostar ticket price.
