A Bit
About Hotelroom.com
Though
part of the Priceline.com family, when booking on Hotelroom.com,
you do not have to bid on unknown hotels (where you don't know the name of the hotel or the location before you book
it); but instead, you can review a list of hotels in your destination city before booking. And what is very useful to
the savvy traveler is the ability to sort the list of hotels by location in a city ("Select an Area") and to sort
by various categories ("Quick Sort"), such as popularity, price, star rating and guest review score*.
Maps are also provided showing the location of each hotel. Hotelroom.com makes finding
and booking hotels that fit your plan and budget easy. * Reviews are also available on other sites, such as Expedia,
Hotels.com or Travelocity, to give you other opinions; just click on "Find a Hotel" on the navigation
bar to the left to link to these other sites. (Budget Europe has no affiliation with Hotelroom.com or any other hotel
booking services on our website, though we do earn a very, very small commission if hotels are booked via the links on our
website.)

The Best of the "Blue" Danube
An irresistible day trip
out of Vienna is to take a cruise between Melk and Krems, the best part of the
Danube. This two-hour ride will give you a look at three picture-postcard towns: Melk with its famous abbey,
the Kloster Melk, a Baroque fantasy; Dürnstein with its castle ruin where Richard the Lion-Hearted
was imprisoned after returning from the Crusades; and Krems, a historic wine town, with, of course, its own wine
museum. A possible day trip is to take a train to Melk, a boat to Dürnstein or Krems, and then a train back to Vienna.
If you are ambitious, there is a walking path along the bank of the Danube between Durnstein and Krems; the distance is just
over four miles. Note: Railpasses valid in Austria give a 20% discount on the boats between Melk and Krems (DDSG Blue Danube
Schiffahrt Company only; www.ddsg-blue-danube.at).

- Getting to Split and
then on to Dubrovnik in Croatia: The only convenient rail service is from Zagreb, the capital of Croatia
and well worth a stop in its own right as it has a very nice old quarter. Besides an overnight train during the summer, the
best connection is the early morning train to Split (departs about 7 am; takes 5.5 hrs). Split is an enjoyable seaside port
town built right around the ancient Roman Emperor Diocletian's Palace, and many of the palace walls are uniquely
incorporated into present buildings. There are other significant Roman ruins in the area as well. From Split it is easy to
get ferries to any of the lovely Dalmatian coastal islands such as Hvar or Korcula. From late spring through the fall,
there is also good ferry service down the coast to Dubrovnik. There is no rail service to Dubrovnik, but there are
frequent inexpensive, comfortable buses (up to 14/day, taking about 4.5 hrs) along the coastal highway. As
this highway hugs the rugged coast almost the whole way, this bus ride is one of the most outstanding scenic rides anywhere
in Europe.
"If you
want to see heaven on earth, come to Dubrovnik." — George Bernard Shaw We agree: Dubrovnik is one of Europe's most unique cities. - Ferries to Italy:
Service is primarily between Dubrovnik and Bari or between Split and Ancona. Jadrolinija offers mainly overnight crossings;
see www.jadrolinija.hr for schedules. SNAV operates a fast ferry during the summer from Split to Ancona (4.5 hrs); see www.SNAV.com for schedules.
- Dalmatian Coastal Ferry: Jadrolinija
runs a ferry twice per week during the summer months between Rijeka and Dubrovnik with stops in Zadar, Split, Hvar
and Korcula. The most scenic part is between Split and Dubrovnik, which the ferry glides by in the daylight hours; the
section between Rijeka and Split is overnight. See www.jadrolinija.hr for schedules.
The
Dalmatian Coast is once again drawing sizable numbers of tourists, and taking a cruise along the island-strewn coast is a
good way to visit Croatia, part of the former Yugoslavia. Boats starting at Rijeka make stops at Zadar,
Split, Hvar, Korcula and Dubrovnik, all of which, except
Split, are difficult or impossible to get to by train. Highlights en route are Split, locale of the
Roman Emperor Diocletian's Palace and today a significant archaeological site; Hvar, offering
extreme beauty and a medieval Venetian-style village; Korcula, with Marco Polo's House, purportedly
the explorer's birthplace; and Dubrovnik, pictured on many travel posters, a unique walled port city
of unusual beauty and, justifiably, called the "Pearl of the Adriatic" by Lord Byron.
